![]() ![]() ![]() Though the plot is fairly bare, Arudpragasam more than makes up for the lack of action through his prose. These two points of communication serve to frame the rest of the story and Krishan’s journey to the northern parts of Sri Lanka to attend Rani’s funeral. This call comes just as Krishan is processing a recent email from a past lover, Anjum. Our protagonist, Krishan, receives an unexpected call alerting him that his grandmother’s caretaker, Rani, was found dead at the bottom of a well while visiting her home in northern Sri Lanka. In fact, the story itself is quite simple. It lacks the satisfaction of a thrilling adventure full of unexpected twists and turns nor does it have a precise final ending. To be transparent, there isn’t much that happens within the confines of this book, at least not in a traditional sense. Very rarely have I come across a story that has captured my attention as intensely as Anuk Arudpragasam’s “A Passage North.” This novel, shortlisted for the Booker Prize, is both a love letter to Sri Lanka, the author’s place of origin, as well as a testament to the terrors of war and the tenacity of the human condition. ![]()

![]() Deftly incorporating facts into the background, Rinaldi keeps the focus on her characters, developing an entertainingly contentious rapport between Caroline and Miz Melindy while strewing the cast with rough men and widowed or abandoned women. ![]() Caroline not only learns that Johnny has switched sides, but that her birth mother, Miz Melindy’s daughter, didn’t die (as she had always been told) she was shipped off to the West Indies as the price of Caroline’s acceptance as a Whitaker. Word comes that brother Johnny, a member of the Loyalist militia, has been wounded, so Caroline and her “negra” grandmother, Miz Melindy, set out to bring him home. While sister Georgia Ann has taken to dining nightly with haughty Lord Rawdon, Caroline Whitaker, 14, scorns the occupying officer she has seen a friend hanged and her Patriot father thrown into prison. So odd, in fact, that I wasn't sure I was reading the panels in the correct order. ![]() Sometimes it made sense.ish, but there were multiple times that it was just and odd pause in the story. There were some weird panels where a character would just stop in the middle of a thought and just.stare. The art, though? It was a different story. The dialogue was clunky, but it was all there. Like, the author didn't skimp on the story. Either this was a horrible graphic adaptation of my favorite childhood novel, or my younger self had horrible taste in books. ![]() Did I only like this because it has that sci-fi element that I craved, but couldn't really get at a young age, because of my weird religious upbringing? Not sure how well any of that stuff would sit with me today. ![]() The religious stuff I remember, but man.ugh. Was Meg always this horrible and whiny? Was Charles Wallace an obnoxious know-it-all in the book? Were all of the characters annoyingly vague and cryptic in the original? And surely the dialogue was better, right? But Jesus.this made me rethink why I have such fond memories of it. ![]() I'm holding up my worn out, coverless copy as proof. And I loved that book when I was a kid.Įasily, it was my favorite. Fabian had never respected the fact that Jackson was concerned for him he went ahead and took risks anyway. Jackson is very risk averse since his most serious relationship was with a professional risk-taker that ended in tragedy. And Stone is a fun-loving sweetie almost exactly what I would imagine a rock star to be like. Jackson is a surprising character in some ways – he’s such a romantic underneath the tough, stoic mask he wears as a bodyguard. Jackson and Stone are SUCH a great couple. ![]() One Time Only was so good I feel like I want to jump right back in and read it again! This book was SO delicious! Drawing upon the abundant recent scholarship, this article argues that the adoption of an international and comparative perspective, together with an extension of the time frame within which consequences are assessed, makes clear that the Seven Years War was decisive for the European ancien régime.
